3 Ways to Make Your Morning Java Healthier

Many people need their cup of “morning joe” to get started with their day. While caffeine in and of itself is actually good for you in moderate amounts, that morning (or afternoon, or evening) coffee might not be so healthy. Here are 3 ways you can keep that cup of java beneficial to your body.

1. Cut Back (or Eliminate) the Cream and Sugar

Cream and sugar is the number one killer of healthy amounts of caffeine. When you consume a cup of joe that is loaded down with several teaspoons of sugar or non-dairy creamers chock full of hydrogenated oils, you’re eliminating any good the coffee is actually doing for you. Cut back on the amount of cream and/or sugar you use in your coffee, or eliminate it entirely.

2. Add a Dash of Cinnamon to Your Coffee

Cinnamon can not only take out some of the bitterness in a strong cup of coffee, it’s also a great way to improve your overall health without much effort. Cinnamon has been shown to help lower blood glucose levels, triglycerides and cholesterol levels.

3. Forget Flavored Coffees — Just Add Cocoa

Flavored coffees usually use sugary, super-sweet syrups to give them an artificial flavor. Skip this and get great flavor in your cup of morning java simply by adding cocoa powder to taste. Cocoa is high in antioxidants, and and can also help reduce the risk of heart disease.

If you’re someone who can’t function without their morning coffee, you’re not alone.
