Soda has long been touted as a drink that is “bad” for you, but does soda and carbonated water actually have some benefits when consumed in moderation? Let’s find out.
Soda and carbonated water has been shown to relieve nausea and stomach upset in many cases. In a 2002 study conducted by the European Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, carbonated water was significantly more effective at reducing indigestion than regular water. However, this doesn’t give people with stomach problems carte blanch to drink any type of soda. Typically the only sodas that are effective at relieving indigestion are plain carbonated water and clear lemon-lime flavored sodas and ginger ales.
While plain water will never be topped when it comes to staying hydrated, sodas and carbonated water can also help keep an individual’s hydration level up. Sodas without caffeine and excess sugar are more effective at hydrating than caffeinated sodas, because caffeine is a diuretic and can lead to more water loss than is being taken in.
In the same 2002 study by the European Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, carbonated water was shown to relieve constipation more effectively than regular water.
Consuming Soda in Moderation
The truth of the matter is that soda does have some health benefits, but it should be consumed in moderation like all treats. Overdoing it on the soda can easily nullify any potential health benefits and leave you with more problems later on. But when you enjoy an ice cold soda from time to time, you certainly don’t have to feel guilty about it!
